Maria Kaika Wins 2021 European Award for Excellence in Teaching

 Central European University (CEU) is pleased to announce the winner of the tenth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities as Prof. Dr. Maria Kaika of the University of Amsterdam. The prestigious European award is accompanied by the €5,000 Diener Prize, and will be presented at CEU’s Opening Ceremony in September 2021.

Michael LaBelle Highlights Energy Policy as Jean Monnet Chair

Earlier this year, CEU Associate Professor Michael LaBelle completed his tenure as the Jean Monnet Chair, during which he led the joint Energy Policy Research Group (ERPG) and Jean Monnet Chair activities. The Jean Monnet Chair supports professors specializing in European Studies.

Presidential Scholar Lekova Innovates Research Methods

Presidential Scholar Award Recipient Anita Lekova

Anita Lekova received an MA (Honors) in Russian Studies and Politics from the University of Edinburgh. Her dissertation analyzed visual culture and the portrayal of Soviet women in the 1920s and 1930s. She continues to focus on the topic of cultural awareness at CEU and for her thesis, she is analyzing how gender is understood within the Bulgarian context. Lekova also recently worked on ERASMUS+ project development as a corporate social responsibility intern.

Stephen Awoyemi earned his MPhil in Conservation Leadership from University of Cambridge and his MSc in Zoology from the University of Ibadan. He is currently conducting fieldwork in Nigeria as an Environmental Sciences and Policy PhD candidate at Central European University (CEU). Awoyemi has held multiple leadership positions. As the Regional Coordinator of Africa within the University of Cambridge's Conservation Leadership Alumni Network, he cultivated and supported opportunities for personal and career development.

Enabling Student Success: The Hangartner Fellowship

Philipp Hangartner has funded the 2020-21 Peter Hangartner Fellowship, honoring the memory of his father, for whom the award is named. The fellowship opens new doors for a promising student in CEU’s Department of Economics and Business.
